Riverview Hospital Upgrades to DR
Riverview Hospital and Alpha Imaging Team Up to Deliver World-Class X-ray Imaging
Radiology Department Upgrade to Digital Radiography (DR) Underscores Hospital’s Commitment to High-Quality Patient Care
Riverview Hospital, just north of Indianapolis, has always prided itself on providing world-class healthcare. With more than 350 physicians in 35 medical specialties, Riverview offers a wide variety of clinical services for patients in the greater Indianapolis area. “We are committed to delivering high-quality, safe care to each and every one of our patients,” said Olivia Huser, Director of Marketing, PR and Business Development at Riverview Hospital. “To support a wide range of clinical programs, Riverview maintains state-of-the-art medical technologies that rival some of the largest facilities in the country.”
One of the most recent investments in medical technology at Riverview was the upgrade of X-ray radiographic equipment within the Radiology department. With the help of Alpha Imaging, one of the country’s largest distributors of medical imaging equipment, Riverview replaced Computed Radiography (CR) equipment with Digital Radiography (DR) throughout the department to improve image quality, reduce radiation dose and improve clinical workflow.
“There has been a significant improvement in image quality with the DR upgrade,” said Kelly Wells, Director of Imaging Services at Riverview Hospital. “In addition to our radiologists, our surgeons and referring physicians have noticed a big difference as well.”
The high-quality images from the Canon CXDI-70C wireless DR detector used at Riverview Hospital are also coupled with lower patient radiation doses. Over 15 years of DR detector innovation have resulted in a very dose-efficient design. “With the new Canon panels, we’ve cut our radiation doses nearly in half and get better image quality,” said Wells. “Our patients are definitely benefitting from this new technology.”
In addition to improved image quality and reduced radiation exposure, the DR upgrade also delivers dramatic improvements in clinical workflow and throughput. “The speed of the Canon DR panel is amazing,” said Wells. “It used to take several minutes per exam just to walk the cassettes to a CR reader for processing. Now we can review the images directly at the X-ray system within seconds. DR has saved us as much as five minutes per exam in the radiography room and 10 minutes per exam on a portable unit. When you’re performing 250 exams per day, these savings quickly become very significant.”
The convenience of DR not only benefits patients but technologists as well. “Our employee satisfaction increased tremendously after the upgrade. DR provides a more efficient use of everyone’s time,” said Wells.
The DR upgrade at Riverview was the result of a collaboration with Alpha Imaging, headquartered in nearby Cleveland, Ohio. “We’ve worked with Alpha’s local team for many years and they really understand our operation,” commented Wells. “During the initial stages of the project, we challenged them to come up with five or six different options and they certainly delivered. Their flexibility to find the best solution for the department is always appreciated. It’s not something we see from every vendor out there.”
Alpha Imaging’s installation and clinical applications teams strive to ensure equipment is available for clinical use as quickly as possible. According to Wells, “The equipment was delivered on-time and we had a great experience with Applications training. They made themselves available to us after the training, so we could call, email or text with any questions.”
When asked how likely she would be on a scale of one to 10 (10 being most likely) to recommend Alpha Imaging and the Canon DR flat panel to a colleague, Kelly replied “10,” saying, “I asked the same question of other supervisors and technologists in the department and they agreed!”
